Formentera is the smaller island of the Balearic Islands
In ancient times Formentera was used as a wheat storage depot by the Romans, from which it derives its name. The island is predominantly flat, with a few highlands. The resident population is around ten thousand spread among six administrative regions. Its many pristine and unspoiled white beaches attract many tourists, which grows its population every summer.
Thanks to its proximity to Ibiza and the good ferry service that connects the two islands, Formentera is easy to reach. Its thriving tourism is less tied to the colourful world of nightclubs which characterizes Ibiza. In recent years it has become a destination for many Italian tourists who have established a niche for great fashion and music.
There are several kiosks (‘chiringuito’ in Spanish), which are transformed into clubs from sunset. Formentera is also one of the favourite places in the Mediterranean Sea by naturists, who continue to attend most of the beaches on the island thanks to the permissive Spanish legislation, which allows nudism in many areas of the country.
The official languages of the island are Catalan and Spanish.
The most beautiful beaches on Formentera are in Ses Illetas, situated in the northernmost point of the island. These beaches are regarded as nature reserves and are famous for a few ten meters strip of sand with the sea on both sides. It fascinates tourists to find it calm on one side and rough on the other. You can access this area free walking and cycling, but it is necessary to pay a toll if you go by car or scooter.
The area of Ses Illetas is one of the most complete leisure: water sports, restaurants, kiosks, facilities for bathers.
There is also a service of maritime route that connects this area with the port of La Savina and the island of Espalmador.
Migjorn is one of the largest beaches on the island: its surface of sand covers most of the south coast, from La Mola in Es Cap de Barbaria.
Cala Saona is a small beach with restaurants and kiosks where you can admire the nearby island Ibiza. From there the coast of Punta Pedrera and the beautiful cliffs of Punta Rasa are easily accessible on foot.
Llevant is a large beach close to Ses Illetas, located in the north-eastern tip of the island.
The most famous beach of the island is S’Alga, a real natural harbour, totally free from restaurants or beach resorts. The vigilance tower,Torre de Sa Guardiola, located at the highest point, is in a natural park rich in flora and fauna.
